ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP
Martin Family Farms understands its inherent responsibility to preserve natural resources for future generations. Today, Martin Family Farms embodies that commitment through implementing the four pillars of environmental sustainability—carbon footprint, water footprint, air footprint and land footprint. This includes strategies to reduce odor, protect water resources and enrich the land. Martin Family Farms is focused on delivering responsible and progressive environmental management to the farm, and its inclusion in the We Care Initiative cements that focus.

The Value of Manure for Soil Sustainability

Martin Family Farms strives to embody environmentally sustainable agriculture through utilizing manure from Martin Family Farm pigs to fertilize crops.

The natural cycle of having the crops nourish the animals and the animals nourish the crops makes pork production a great example of sustainable agriculture. Manure fertilizers can completely displace chemical fertilizers in the crop system, and they are more biologically friendly and gentle. Manure fertilizer provides a broad complement of secondary and micronutrients, such as calcium, magnesium, sulfur, manganese, zinc, and boron. Perhaps most importantly, manure fertilizer contains organic matter that activates the soil biology, stimulates the nutrient cycle, improves soil structure and enhances soil water management.
